Scour Mitigation at Bridge Abutments Using Spur Dikes

One of the main reasons for bridge failure is local scour at abutments. Laboratory experiments, under clear water condition, were carried out to investigate reduction around vertical abutment by adding one upstream spur dike. Sand with a median and standard deviation diameter equal 0.80 mm 2.173 respectively, formed bed material. Three different stages dikes varying sets as: 1) distances from (6 sets), 2) orientation angles (4 3) lengths (3 considered. Effects all are studied respect two parameters, i.e., flow discharge depth, considering 9 runs every set total number equals 99. Empirical dimensionless equation developed each set, between relative depth corner Froude number. Four general equations, whole within stage, estimating in addition three horizontal dimensions hole (i.e., downstream besides width). It concluded that using led significant on abutment, stages.Maximum percentage 81.56%, observed dike touched distance flume wall, dike, times length, angle 90°, length length.
